BHEL to hike manufacturing capacity to 20,000 MW

In our article dt.16.6.08 we had stated that the current power equipment production capacity is a major constraints for achieving the gingantic power generation capacity addition of @ 35000 MW per annum and also a big challenge and it needed to be scaled up to 35000 MW per annum immediately to achieve the terminal generating capacity of 9,62,200 MW by 2032. It is hartening to read recent news that BHEL has decided to enhance it production capacity to 20,000 MW instead of 15,000 MW.
To achieve this production capacity by 2011, BHEL needs to grow 2 to 3 times bigger in next three years from current production capacity of 7500-10,000 MW. It will require extraordinary efforts in actually achieving this capacity.

NEW DELHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals on Wednesday said it will enhance its manufacturing capacity to 20,000 MW in three years from the current 10,000 MW. “BHEL will increase its manufacturing capacity from the present 10,000 MW to 20,000 MW by the year 2011,'' a company statement said.

The company expects to reach the 15,000 MW manufacturing capacity mark by this year-end. Besides capacity augmentation of existing products, other major areas of investment include facilities for higher rating nuclear sets, 765 kV transformers and other associated transmission equipment. “Attention is also being given to rebuild and retrofit existing facilities to enhance their life, accuracy and productivity through additional investment,'' said Mr K Ravi Kumar, CMD, BHEL.

On the partnership front, he said the company entered into a MoU with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board for forming a joint venture to set up a 2x800 MW supercritical thermal power project. A MoU was signed with MMTC for enhancing export of power plant equip ment and projects leveraging counter trade and bulk buying, Kumar said. Another MoU was also signed with NTPC to form a joint venture for jointly executing EPC projects and power equipment manufacturing, he added.

BHEL secured the highest-ever orders worth Rs 50,270 cr in 2007-08 and has an order book position of over Rs 85,000 cr. The company's turnover reached Rs 21,401 cr, registering a growth of 14.2 per cent and net profit soared 19 per cent over the previou s year's to Rs 2,859 cr. - PTI
